Organic farming is planet friendly and has the highest welfare for the earth, the regulations place strong emphasis on the protection of wildlife and the environment. Organic Farming severely restricts or prohibits the use of pesticides and artificial chemical fertilisers; instead nutrient rich soil is used to grow crops. Free range life for farm animals is guaranteed and the routine use of drugs on farm animals is not allowed. The production and use of genetically modified foods is also banned.
The Soil Association is a non-profit organisation set up in 1946 by a group of farmers and scientists who wanted to highlight the link between farming methods and the health of humans, animals and the land. It is the most recognised Organic certification body in the UK. The body has high and comprehensive standards for organic production, meeting both the UK government’s standards and the EU standards.
Bart Spices has recently become a member of the Organic Trade Board. This is a non-profit organisation which aims to develop, promote and support organic trade in the UK. It is not a certification body, although it does work closely with the Soil Association. Instead it aims to develop a network of businesses who are able to trade, share and utilise resources regarding the organic community.
The Organic Trade Board acts as a united voice about the organic industry to consumers, the press, the government and certifiers.
