Fairtrade

Fairtrade PartnersBart Spices was the first company to supply a Fairtrade spice to the supermarkets, with the launch of our Fairtrade Vanilla Pods in November 2005.  This was followed by Fairtrade Ground Ginger, Cinnamon Sticks and Turmeric in March 2006.  During 2007’s Fairtrade fortnight, Bart launched two new spices, Cloves and Black Peppercorns, and in time for 2008’s Fairtrade fortnight we launched Mixed Spice and Cardamom Pods.  We continue to add products to our growing range of Fairtrade ingredients in our commitment to offer a better deal to producers in developing countries, including a Fairtrade sugar range and a Fairtrade cotton bag.

The Fairtrade initiative is a tool for development that ensures farmers in developing countries get a better deal for their produce.  All the products in the Fairtrade range are certified by the Fairtrade Foundation, meaning that Bart Spices has been verified as paying a sustainable price to the farmers for our spices.  This includes a “social premium” which is used to fund projects to improve local community facilities such as education, healthcare and water supplies.

The cost of the premium that disadvantaged producers receive is absorbed by Bart Spices and not passed onto our customers in the form of an increased retail price.  We aim to create an ethically conscious range of products by replacing our spices with a Fairtrade alternative where appropriate.  An ever-expanding Fairtrade range means that, at no extra cost, consumers can buy products that make a difference.

The Fairtrade Foundation was established in 1992 and is a non-profit organisation that licenses products as Fairtrade in accordance with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards.
